The Story of the Rolex Sea-Dweller 4000 – Built for Extreme Depths

The Rolex Sea-Dweller was developed in the 1960s specifically for professional divers. While the Submariner already offered high water resistance, saturation divers needed a watch that could withstand extreme depths and long decompression periods. Rolex collaborated with the French diving company COMEX and developed the helium escape valve, which allows pressure equalization during ascent.

The Sea-Dweller 4000 continued this tradition, combining proven technology with modern Rolex innovation. The reference 16600, produced from 1988 to 2008, was the last Sea-Dweller with an aluminum bezel and remained visually close to the Submariner. In 2014, the model returned as the reference 116600—featuring a scratch-resistant Cerachrom ceramic bezel, an improved Oyster case, and water resistance to 1,220 meters (4,000 feet).

It is powered by the reliable Rolex Caliber 3135, renowned for its precision and durability. With a power reserve of approximately 48 hours, it offers solid performance for daily use. The broad Chromalight luminous material on the dial and hands ensures optimal legibility in dark environments. The unidirectional rotating Cerachrom ceramic bezel with diver's scale allows you to reliably track the remaining dive time.

The Sea-Dweller 4000 has evolved over the years, but it remains true to its DNA as a professional diver's watch. While the early models still featured a classic aluminum bezel, Rolex later opted for modern materials and improved case proportions.

Sea Dweller 116600 (2014 – 2017):First with a ceramic bezel, improved case proportions and wider lugs for a more striking look.
